LAKEWAY, Texas (KXAN) - The Texas Department of Transportation says anywhere between 30,000 - 40,000 motorists travel along Ranch Road 620 between Ranch Road 2222 and State Highway 71.
Sgt. Mike Stroh has been with the Travis County Sheriff's office for 23 years. He says the number of crashes on Ranch Road 620 have gone up faster than he can count speeding cars.
The reason? "Simply not paying attention," Stroh said. "People pulling out from side streets running red lights. Of course, texting -- things like that."
The road is full of curves and blind spots that provide extra challenges for drivers.
Austin police reports nearly 500 crashes in the last three years. In Williamson County, 272 more. The portion of roadway that stretches through Lakeway had 153 crashes last year and 86 more so far this year.
The spike in accidents is partly attributed to growth in the area. More homes and more businesses mean a lot more cars on a road that wasn't designed to accommodates high traffic.
"It's getting really bad," said motorist Sheila Otterpohl. "You have to watch those turn lanes."
"It starts both ways from about noon on until about 7 o'clock at night," added Johnny Mac. "It's just totally unbearable."
Some say more traffic lights would make things safer. Others say toll roads are the answer. While there is no consensus on a solution: most who travel this stretch of 620 worry things will get worse before they get better.
The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization's long term plan shows no modifications or expansions on the schedule for the roadway.
