AUSTIN (KXAN) - Capitol security said it "discovered one jar suspected to contain urine, 18 jars suspected to contain feces, and three bottles suspected to contain paint" being brought to the Texas Capitol on Friday.
"All of these items – as well as significant quantities of feminine hygiene products, glitter and confetti possessed by individuals – were required to be discarded; otherwise those individuals were denied entry into the gallery," the agency said.
The items were taken during bag searches in the hours leading up to the abortion bill debate in the Senate.
"In the interest of the safety and security of Texas legislators and the general public, these inspections will continue until the conclusion of Senate business," DPS said in a statement.
Earlier, social media and liberal-leaning online publications lit up when word that the products were being confiscated spread. The Huffington Post picked on the story, sending it viral across the nation.
"Tampon Confiscated, Guns Still Allowed at Texas Capitol Ahead of Abortion Vote," the headline reported.
The practice reportedly started out of concerns that the small items could be thrown from the Senate gallery onto the floor during the contentious debate.
Light snow flurries were reported early Saturday just north of the KXAN viewing area. Sub-freezing temperatures along with a slight chance of light snow, sleet and freezing rain will continue through Sunday morning.
