AUSTIN (KXAN) - A Capital Metro bus accidentally drove over a 22-year-old passenger who slipped under a bus in Southeast Austin near a Riverside Drive apartment complex where many college students live.
Andy Ching-Nien Wang died shortly after arriving at University Medical Center Brackenridge.
Austin police said the accident happened just after 2 a.m., after the bus had stopped at the University Estates apartment complex on Crossing Place Drive just off Riverside Drive.
The preliminary investigations says Wang and a friend were picked up downtown. Witnesses say Wang was acting intoxicated and his friend had to help him stand up. When the men were dropped off at 1300 Crossing Place bus stop, witnesses say Want got off the bus, lost his balance and fell backward underneath the bus,
On Jan. 30, a bus hit a pedestrian at the intersection of Braker Lane and Jollyville Road in Northwest Austin. Amanda Dewey, 53, died from her injuries several days later.
It was raining at the time, and the bus driver simply did not see the woman. Witnesses told police the bus ran over her.
The bus driver was cited for failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian.
That was the first pedestrian death involving a bus in the history of the transit agency.
