CAMERON, Texas (KXAN) - U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson Friday announced a $1 million Economic Development Administration grant to the Cameron Economic Development Corporation to provide key infrastructure that will support the construction of a special events center.
When completed, the center is expected to create or retain 128 jobs and generate $167.5 million in new economic activity in the city, according to grantee estimates.
"This $1 million EDA investment in the Cameron Special Events Center is an example of the Obama Administration's commitment to supporting a 21st century infrastructure," Bryson said. "The grant announced Friday will support a public-private venture that will help revitalize Cameron's downtown area, thereby helping Texas create jobs and modernize a critical foundation of an economy built to last."
EDA's investment will fund site preparation and utility work needed prior to the construction of Cameron's new special events center. This prep work includes water and wastewater lines, irrigation and water reuse systems, and pavement marking.
When finished, the new center is expected to help promote regional tourism in the area, revitalize Cameron's downtown, and generate new revenue through increased sales tax receipts.
