COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KXAN) - The Brazos County constable killed trying to serve an eviction notice in College Station on Monday was hailed as a hero by his law enforcement colleagues struggling to cope with the tragedy.
"His loss is really devastating for our family, and it's just stunning to know that he's gone," Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk said about Brian Bachmann, 41. "Today is a very sad sad day for Brazos County we've lost a good man. Brian was not only a great man. He was a great father a great husband and a good peace officer."
Bachmann's body was brought back to College Station on Tuesday after an autopsy in Travis County.
Heads hung low as his casket was brought into the funeral home.
Bachmann, who leaves behind a wife and two children was serving an eviction notice near the Texas A&M campus Monday afternoon when the 35-year-old Thomas Alton Caffall opened fire. Bachmann died from his wounds at the hospital. He was an 18-year veteran of the force.
Police returned fire and killed the gunman, but not before 51-year-old Chris Northcliffe died, and four others were hurt in the crossfire.
Houston mother Barbara Holdsworth, 51, reportedly underwent surgery after being shot in the lungs. She was in stable, but serious, condition.
College Station Police Officer Justin Oehlke, 25, was shot in the calf and was in stable condition after undergoing surgery Monday. He has been on the force for a year.
Bryan Police Officer Brad Smith, 54, was injured by shrapnel and was treated and released from the hospital. He has been with the department for 15 years.
Bryan Police Officer Phil Dorsett, 30, was injured by shrapnel. He has been with the department for five years.
