AUSTIN (KXAN) - Some of the dogs rescued from a home in Bastrop were adopted from the Austin Humane Society Saturday.
"The Austin community definitely did not want to see these dogs suffer anymore and they are taking them to their homes," said Frances Jonon, Executive Director of the Austin Humane Society.
Jonan said more than 100 animals were adopted from their "Austin Kitty Limits and Puppy Palooza" adoption event.
The dogs from Bastrop were taken in by the Austin Humane Society because there wasn't a facility large enough in Bastrop to accommodate that many animals.
The dogs were living in squalor, among feces, urine and trash. Several of the dogs had severely matted hair, filled with pounds of dirt and feces and all of the dogs were covered in urine and infested with fleas. One of the dogs rescued had 10 pounds of feces-matted dreadlocks covering his body.
Since the dogs arrived, the population has increased because one of them gave birth, said Lisa Starr of the Austin Humane Society
The Bastrop dogs have been cleaned, groomed and spayed or neutered and are ready for new homes.
The Austin Humane Society said it will be open Sunday and Memorial Day.
