AUSTIN (KXAN) - Regulars at the Pease Park disc golf coursewho hope to keep it open had a chance to talk about their ideaswith Austin Parks and Recreation leaders Thursday. Nearly onehundred packed into the Lamar Senior Activity Center.
The city plans to shut down disc golf at Pease in December,saying that the park needs a break and restoration after years ofdisc golfing has torn up the land.
"Most of the damage is mother nature," said veteran disc golferKurt Standiford. "This is a flood zone."
Standiford said he helped build the course in 1991 when he movedto Austin.
"To say that disc golfers did that - I don't believe it," saidone golfer to parks and recreation department officials at themeeting.
Parks officials announced the plan two weeks ago, noting thecity is already building a new 18-hole course at Colorado RiverPark in East Austin.
But longtime players at Pease consider it an icon in the heartof the city. The course snakes along Lamar Boulevard andweaves back and forth across Shoal Creek.
Disc golfers hope to sell the city on the idea that improvementsto the Shoal Creek Greenbelt set for next year will restore thelandscape enough to keep the course open.
