WALTHAM CROSS, England (AP) — New Zealand kayaker Mike Dawson finished in last place during Wednesday's Olympic kayak slalom semifinals after being penalized 100 seconds for missing two gates.

This time, his mother had nothing to do with it.

Kay Dawson is a judge for the event. On Sunday, she penalized her son two seconds for hitting a gate. Mike Dawson still qualified for the semifinals, but he missed a wave toward the end of his run and failed to go through two consecutive gates.

Each miss cost him 50 seconds, dooming Dawson to last.

Kay Dawson was stationed at the third gate, and Mike joked that he made sure to do his very best at her gate.
