NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - Newport Police have busted a pair of suspected armed robbers after an undercover sting with a city pizza shop.
The men were wanted for holding up delivery drivers in the area of Willow Street. Police asked the owners of A-1 Pizza to give them a heads-up if there were any orders placed from that area. When a call came in, police were notified and they sent officers to the pizza place.
An employee says police took empty delivery bags and an unmarked car with an A-1 Pizza sign on it. An undercover officer drove the car to the neighborhood where he was approached by two males. One of the men had a bb gun in his waistband, and when the officer identified himself, one of the suspects ran from the scene. Other officers in the area caught that man soon after.
Police say 20-year-old William White and a 17-year-old juvenile are both charged with first-degree robbery.
The pair may also be charged with two previous robberies against delivery drivers.
