UNDATED (CNN) - Holiday shoppers weren't just interested in buying the hottest electronics and toys this year. Guns flew off the shelves in record numbers too.
According to the FBI, almost a half-million instant criminal background checks for gun ownership were done in the last six days before Christmas.
The one-day record for background checks was set this year on Black Friday, the big shopping day after Thanksgiving.
FBI officials did not offer a theory on the spike in gun sales.
The National Rifle Association says the figures indicate more people feel they need guns for self defense.
