WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. general who vowed to fix intelligence to better fight the Afghan war has been nominated to head the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who worked with elite special operations forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been nominated to head the agency just as special operations takes a larger role in security missions worldwide, and other parts of the military shrink.

President Barack Obama nominated Flynn, who must be confirmed by the Senate.

Flynn, who favors counterinsurgency, published a controversial paper entitled "Fixing Intel," which faulted intelligence gathering in Afghanistan.
