WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - A 44-year-old Barrington man who recovered from a major spinal cord injury has met with U.S. Rep. James Langevin to talk about ways to bolster efforts to help spinal cord injury victims.

Trent Theroux and Langevin, who is quadriplegic, came together Friday to discuss Theroux's advocacy work with the nonprofit RISE Above Paralysis and the Democrat's legislation to increase spinal cord research.

Theroux was run over by a motorboat in Narragansett Bay in 2002. Its propeller severed major muscles in his back and cut five bones of his spinal column. At first he was unable to walk but he underwent extensive rehabilitation.

Theroux will attempt to swim from Point Judith to Block Island in September to raise money to support those with spinal cord injuries.
