MINNESOTA (CNN/WCCO) - For the last 18 years, John Unger and Schoep have been constant companions. But time is taking its toll. The dog has lost his sight and now suffers from arthritis.
To relieve some of the pain and stiffness, John drives a mile from his home to take Schoep to Lake Superior. In John's arms, there's no urge to swim, only to sleep as Schoep is granted a few moments of serenity from his sore limbs.
A photo of the pair in the lake posted online went viral, and people from around the world have been moved by the image. Schoep's vet has received calls offering to pay for the dog's medication and treatment.
