The cost of Thanksgiving dinner

Turkey costs three percent more this year

(CNN) - When you sit down for Thanksgiving dinner, be thankful that the cost of the meal is up only slightly over last year.

According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, the average cost of a Thanksgiving dinner for ten, with turkey and the traditional sides, is $49.48 this year, up 28 cents from 2011.

The bulk of the bill, says deputy chief economist John Anderson, is the turkey, up three percent to $22.23.

"Turkey competes with chicken and pork and beef and other products. Turkey production itself is actually a little higher this year so it's not an issue of turkey not being available, it's just that the meat prices overall have gone up," Anderson explained.

This summer's drought didn't have much of an impact on Thanksgiving prices. Lags in food production make it a little too soon.

Other items with an uptick in price include onions, eggs, sugar, flour and butter. Dinner rolls are up three cents.

The biggest drop is the cost of whipping cream, down 13 cents, followed by stuffing and sweet potatoes, down 11 cents.
