(KXAN) - Jake Ray joined KXAN News Today on the phone from lower Manhattan, where he lives near the One World Trade Center.

Ray talked about what he saw as high winds and pounding rain slammed the nearly empty streets as people hunkered down for the night.

Superstorm Sandy has lived up to its billing as it continues to hit the Northeast.

The powerful weather system is blamed for at least 17 deaths and has knocked out electricity to an estimated 7 million people.
