Rain chances ending as temperatures climb

First Warning Weather

An early morning rain and thunderstorm complex brought some heavy rain to a few spots, but dissipated upon reaching the Austin metro area, and left most areas east of Austin completely dry.

Camp Mabry only received .36”, taking the June total to .57”— a 2.34” deficit from normal for the month. Round Rock reported totals ranging from .50” to 2.35”, and areas near Lake Buchanan also reported more than 2 inches of rain. The heaviest rain was near Buchanan Dam, where 2.86” fell.

Unfortunately, those heavy amounts were very spotty, so little runoff was generated, and very little drought relief resulted. Afternoon heating generated a few more isolated showers, but they quickly dissipated at sunset.

Only a few isolated showers are forecast Wednesday, then no rain at all is expected Thursday through next Tuesday.

With the added soil moisture and still-green vegetation, high temperatures may remain below 100 degrees in Austin for another week, though readings are still expected to be hotter than average—in the mid-to-upper 90s.
