Neighbors rescue family from flood

A mother and two children helped by Good Samaritan

KINGSLAND, Texas (KXAN) - Kingsland neighbors helped a mother and her two, small children escape from their home on Thursday morning as floodwaters surrounded it.

A nearby creek was to blame for the high water in the Camanche Rancheria subdivision. Within minutes, the creek overflowed and surged into the neighborhood, surrounding at least one home at 1 a.m.

Neighbors waded through the water that was above their knees to try and help the family trapped inside the home. Don Miller was one of the rescuers. He and others helped carry the two children to safety. The family spent the rest of the night at Miller's home.

A viewer wrote in at 1:53 a.m. to report their house off CR 309 in Kingsland was beginning to have water in it. Kenita Ashley also wrote in at 2 a.m. Thursday that their house at 310 Yucca Drive in Kingsland was also flooding and that their rain gauge had more than 8 inches.

Still, another hour-and-a-half later another viewer who lives under the Scenic Overlook off 1431 in Kingsland wrote in that the rain was relentless, pouring in under her front door and the carport door.

"We are still using the wet vac to get water out - about 60 gallons so far," said Cinda Stanley. "The rain was so fast, it created a large waterfall between our home and our neighbor's."

Dozens of homes are still inundated with water as of Thursday midday. A road that enters the subdivision was washed away, leaving a 6-foot deep trench.
