AUSTIN (KXAN) - On Wednesday the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority will begin to examine an exception for veterans on toll road 183A.

A state statute allows for veterans with certain license plates to qualify for discounted tolls if the supervising authority permits the discounts.

CTRMA will look into the program and if they have the authority to implement it according to spokesperson Steve Pustelnyk.

The issue is still months from a decision and CTRMA will need to complete a financial analysis and check the legality of the program. Limits in their bond issuing agreement my not allow for toll discounts.

The discount would apply to a limited number of veterans with certain specialty license plates. These include license plates for the following:

  • Disabled Veterans
  • Purple Heart Medal recipients
  • Medal of Honor recipients

Currently no toll road authorities in central Texas offer the discounted program. The Harris County toll road authority in Houston does offer the veterans discount, one of the few places in the state.

CTRMA operates toll road 183A.
