AUSTIN (KXAN) - Police said the victim in a deadly overnight crash on I-35 was driving the wrong way.

Authorities aren't sure where Alvina M. Reed-Mungin, 58, got on the interstate but said an Austin police officer spotted her in North Austin driving northbound in the southbound frontage lanes at 11:55 p.m. Thursday.

Officers attempted to locate the blue PT Cruiser and get ahead of it to prevent Reed-Mungin from entering the interstate in the wrong direction.

The Austin Police Department said the officer who originally spotted the vehicle tried to exit and turn around to catch her but that in the process, Reed-Mungin entered the highway and crashed into two other cars near the Wells Branch Parkway exit .

The wrong-way driver struck a gold Honda head-on, causing a blue Nissan to crash into the Honda.

Reed-Mungin died at the scene, while two people from the other vehicles were transported without life-threatening injuries. One went to University Medical Center Brackenridge, and the other went to a Round Rock hospital.

Officers had to shut down some lanes and direct traffic around the crash for a few hours.

Authorities said alcohol may have een a factor in the crash.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit detectives at (512) 974-5520. This case remains under investigation and is the 31st fatality of the year.
