Wimberley, Lake Travis celebrate teams

Bee Cave/Wimberley - The Lake Travis Cavaliers made history when they clinched their fifth-straight state championship. Since that had never been done in Texas high school football, it stands to reason there had never been five straight state championship parades, either, until now.

The Cavaliers football team wasn't the only team featured at the parade. The school also celebrated the state championships of their volleyball, golf and swimming and diving teams, along with their National Merit Scholars. Senior receiver Griffin Gilbert said he didn't mind sharing the fun.

"It's obviously a real special deal for us," Gilbert said. "Obviously being a senior and being the team that made history as the senior class, it's such an amazing feeling. To be here with all the other sports who have so many accomplishments with their teams, it just shows how big of a school we are and how diverse we are with everything at the school."

In Wimberley, hundreds of Texan fans packed the streets of their downtown to celebrate the Texans' first state championship since 2005. The Texans finished their season a perfect 16-0 after beating Argyle to win the 3A Division II State Championship. Weeks later, Head Coach Weldon Nelms said he had to pinch himself to make sure the title was real.

"After resting and trying to get recovered a little bit, I still go into my office and peek to see if that trophy is still in there," Nelms said, smiling. "It's still a really neat thing. I feel very fortunate and very blessed to be able to have this opportunity."
