WIMBERLEY, TEX (KXAN) - The Wimberley High School football players are well aware of what the Texans did back in 2005, winning the school's first state championship. Now they get their chance to add to the trophy case when they take on Argyle Friday afternoon at Cowboys Stadium for the 3A Division II State Championships.
Making it that much sweeter is the fact that they came from behind to beat Coldspring-Oakhurst on Friday night to avenge last yea's loss in the semi-final round.
"Every school in Texas starts Aug. 2nd with the dream to be the best football team in the state in each classification and to live up to that, as a coach makes you proud of the kids, proud of your program," said head coach Weldon Nelms. "We want to finish this thing, we want to finish right, our kids came back Monday right to task, they were on cloud nine Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. We've come back to business on Monday."
There is one Wimberley player who knows what it's like to win a state title in Cowboys Stadium -- senior quarterback Brady Lambert played on Aledo's 2009 championship team.
"I'm like a little kid in a candy store I guess you could say," said Lambert. "I'm just so happy to be back here, not a lot of people get a chance to go twice (to the state championship game) in their life, I hope to add to my ring collection, I just can't wait."
Friday will have a Central Texas feel at Cowboys Stadium. Following Wimberley's game with Argyle, Lake Travis will take on Hewitt Midway in search of their unprecedented fifth straight state title.
