AUSTIN - Thanks to some young arms and a patient grounds crew, the Longhorns baseball team won both games of their rain-interrupted doubleheader to start the season 2-0.
Sophomore pitcher Nathan Thornhill earned his first win of the year in Texas' 4-0 win in game one. Thornhill pitched five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out two batters.
Freshman Brooks Marlow from Giddings hit two home runs in the game. The first was a solo shot in the fourth inning. The second was a two-run home run in the fifth. The game was briefly interrupted by rain in the sixth inning, but play resumed before the end of the seven-inning game.
In the second game, Texas won 5-3. Mark Payton went 3-4 with two RBI and two doubles. Hoby Milner earned the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits in five innings of work.
