AUSTIN (KXAN) - For the first time under head coach Rick Barnes, the Texas Longhorns will not be playing in the NCAA tournament.
Following a 66-49 loss to Kansas State in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament, Texas' last hope of reaching a 15th straight appearance in the NCAA tournament was extinguished.
Instead, the Longhorns (16-17 overall, 7-11 Big 12 Conference) will play in the College Basketball Invitational . It is Texas' first trip to the CBI, which is in its sixth year of existence.
Texas will play at Houston (19-12 overall, 7-9 Conference USA) in the opening round Wednesday at 8 p.m.
The Longhorns were not able to host a first round game due to the Erwin Center hosting second and third round games of the NCAA Tournament.
College Basketball Invitational Bracket
A first round win would match the Longhorns against the winner of George Mason-College of Charleston on March 25.
The CBI field consists of 16 teams with opening round games being played Tuesday and Wednesday. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Match 25 and semifinal games will be played on March 27.
The finals feature a best of three format, with games being played April 1 and April 3. A third game will be played on the 5th if it is necessary. All games will be played in on-campus facilities.
Also in the CBI field are: Bryant, Lehigh, North Dakota State, Purdue, Richmond, Santa Clara, Tulsa, Vermont, Western Illinois, Western Michigan, Wright State and Wyoming.
Past champions of the invitational include: Pittsburgh (2012), Oregon (2011), VCU (2010), Oregon State (2009) and Tulsa (2008).
