Boys state basketball tournament kicks off

AUSTIN (AP) - The road to a state championship fired back up on Thursday at the Erwin Center.

Action kicked off on the opening day with Class 1A Division and Class 3A  and 4A games.

Class 1A Division I
Dallas Triple A runs away with semifinal win
Jeremiah Jefferson scored 37 points to lead Dallas Triple A Academy to a 90-50 victory over El Paso Harmony on Thursday in a Class A Division I semifinal matchup.

Harmony (26-4) started the game on an 11-0 run but Dallas Triple A dominated the rest of the way, responding with a 15-3 run to take its first lead before going into halftime with a 42-24 advantage.

Dallas Triple A (27-5) outrebounded Harmony 64-33 and scored 50 points in the paint to Harmony's 20. Gary Breaux scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds for the winners, who scored 32 points off 26 Harmony turnovers.

Bryan Urrutia scored a team-high 16 points and Ivan Gutierrez netted 13 for Harmony, which shot just 34.5 percent from the floor.

Mumford advances to second straight title game
LaKendric Hyson and Aubrie King each scored 20 points and Mumford advanced to its second straight state championship game by cruising to an 86-63 win over San Augustine on Thursday in the Class A Division I semifinals.

Four players scored in double figures for Mumford (39-0), which started the game on a 22-3 run. Josh Sustaita scored 19 points and hit five three-pointers while Dion Mack poured in 14.

Mumford will face Dallas Triple A Academy (27-5) on Saturday in the Class A state title game.

Bobby Tanner led San Augustine (23-7) with 25 points and nine rebounds while Dezmond Randle and Aljanon Horton each scored 11. San Augustine, which shot just 34.4 percent from the floor, was making its first appearance at the UIL state tournament in 40 years.

Class 3A
Gilder leads Madison rout of Wylie, 92-55
Admon Gilder scored 25 points and Dallas Madison built a 45-point lead in cruising to a 92-55 win over Abilene Wylie on Thursday in the Class 3A semifinals.

Gilder was 9 of 11 shooting with seven 3-pointers for Madison, 31-5, which shot 61 percent from the field and outscored Wylie 50-14 in the paint.

J.D. Wallace had 13 points for Madison, which had 13 players score in earning its first berth in the state title game since losing in the final in 2010. Madison, the No. 2 team in Class 3A, has won four of its five postseason games by at least 23.

Mike Lopez scored 18 points for Wylie (34-5).

Anderson's 18 points pace Yates over Royal, 81-70
Joseph Anderson scored 18 points and Houston Yates used a big run to open the third quarter for an 81-70 win over Brookshire Royal on Thursday in the Class 3 semifinals.

Anderson led four Yates players scoring in double figures. Darrion Martin scored 17 points and freshman Lorenzo Phillips scored 17 behind five 3-pointers.

After 12 lead changes in the first half, Yates led 41-38 to start the third before a 16-4 run that included 3-pointers by Anderson and Phillips and dunk by Melvin Swift.

Yates (32-4), the top-ranked team in 3A, also forced 31 Royal turnovers, converting them into 30 points.

Wesley Wilson scored 19 points and De'Shaven Flowers had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Royal (29-10), which rallied to get within seven in the fourth quarter.

Class 4A
Terry tops Arlington Heights 46-33
Billy White scored 13 points and Eugene Wright had 11 points and 12 rebounds as Rosenberg Terry beat Fort Worth Arlington Heights 46-33 Thursday night in the Class 4A semifinals.

Playing in its first state tournament, Terry (30-9) led 32-27 at the end of the third quarter, then outscored Arlington Heights 14-6 in the fourth.

Both teams struggled to score with Terry shooting 32 percent and Arlington Heights 30 percent. The teams combined for 3 of 19 on 3-pointers. Terry also had to overcome 12 of 23 shooting on free throws.

A'Shawn Robinson, a top football recruit as a defensive lineman who signed with Alabama, scored 17 points for Arlington Heights (23-11), but just two in the second half after sitting out most of the third quarter with foul trouble.

Defending 4A champ Kimball beats Brennan, 64-52
Senior guard Keith Frazier scored 18 points and two-time defending Class 4A champion Dallas Kimball pulled away late from Northside Brennan for a 64-52 victory Thursday night in the state semifinals.

Gabe Lilly added 18 points and Trent Brinkley scored 12 for Kimball (23-9), which is trying to become the first team to win three consecutive official 4A state championships since Houston Wheatley in 1968-1970.

Dallas South Oak Cliff won four straight titles from 2005-2008 but was later forced to forfeit two of those championships, which are no longer recognized by the University Interscholastic League.

Frazier and Lilly combined for six 3-pointers for Kimball.

John Azzinaro scored 25 points for Brennan (39-3), which came in to its first state tournament as the No. 1 team in 4A. A San Antonio-area team hasn't played won a state championship on the court since San Antonio Jay in 2002. San Antonio Houston lost to Dallas South Oak Cliff in 2005 but was later awarded that season's championship when South Oak Cliff was forced for forfeit the title.

Both teams started slow. Frazier, a 6-foot-6 guard who is scheduled to play in the McDonald's All-American game in April, was scoreless in the first quarter. Brennan led 13-8 before the scoring picked up in the second behind a barrage of 3-pointers by Kimball.

D'Angelo Allen made consecutive 3-pointers and Lilly scored eight points in a row. Frazier's first basket of the game, a 3-pointer from the right wing, pushed Kimball to a 30-21 lead late in the second. Brennan was 0-7 shooting 3-pointers in the half and Kimball led 32-26 to start the third quarter.

Frazier badly misfired on 3-pointer to start the third but then found his stroke. He made three 3-pointers, drawing a technical foul for taunting after one of them, to push Kimball to a 42-37 lead. Azzinaro scored seven points in the third for Brennan, which pulled with 43-41 before Allen tipped in a lob pass at the buzzer.

A dunk by Brinkley and a fast break layup by Lilly quickly pushed Kimball's lead to eight in the opening seconds of the fourth. Brennan managed to cut the lead to four but never threatened the take the lead in the final quarter.

Brennan shot just 32 percent for the game and 1 of 16 on 3-pointers. Kimball shot 40 percent with eight 3-pointers.
