McCoy, Hicks suspended by Brown for 'rule violations'

SAN ANTONIO (KXAN) - Quarterback Case McCoy and linebacker Jordan Hicks were the two University of Texas players sent home for breaking team rules Friday after police in San Antonio confirmed that they were investigating an allegation that two men were involved in a sexual assault at a hotel, sources told KXAN.

"We had a couple young men that broke team rules last night," Longhorns Coach Mack Brown said at the news conference in San Antonio where the team is preparing for Saturday's Alamo Bowl against Oregon State. "They have been suspended from the team and they will be sent home.

"They will not be available for the game and I will not address any more questions in that matter."

KXAN Sports Director Roger Wallace confirmed through his sources that McCoy and Hicks were suspended. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity.

During his news conference earlier in the day, Brown declined to say whether the team has a curfew for players or to elaborate on the matter. The suspended players have not been identified.

According to an incident released by the San Antonio Police Department, officers were sent to a hotel at 2:49 a.m. to interview the woman who made the accusation against the players. The woman, who is 21, had bruises on her knee and arm, the report said. She was later taken to a hospital.

The Antonio TV station KENS first reported that two UT players were accused of sexual assault. The information was attributed to San Antonio police.

No charges were filed and the players' names were not released. The report said the woman invited two men she had met at a hotel bar to her hotel room. When police arrived, they said the woman was crying and was being comforted by a friend.

Sgt. Javier Salazar, a police spokesman, told The Associated Press that detectives are in the early stages of investigating the case.

Distractions involving problems with players on the eve of a bowl game is not new to the Longhorns.

Before the Cotton Bowl in 2000, Brown suspended four players for unspecified rule violations. Two of the players -- defensive lineman Aaron Humphrey, wide receiver Kwame Cavil -- were key starters.

Texas went on to lose to Arkansas 27-6.

Before the Sugar Bowl after the 1995 season it was learned that one of the Texas players had been a former college player whose eligibility had run out years before. The player was 30-year-old Ron Weaver, who had played at Sacramento State in the 1980s. But he had passed himself off as 23-year-old Ron McKelvey.

Texas lost the Sugar Bowl game to Virginia Tech 28-10.
