McCoy returns to Austin to host camp

WESTLAKE (KXAN) - Colt McCoy is a few weeks from reporting to Cleveland Browns training camp, where he’ll battle rookie Brandon Weeden for the starting quarterback’s job.

Before that camp opens, the former Longhorns quarterback is hosting his own youth football camp Friday and Saturday at Westlake High School. 

"It's fun to come home. It's fun to have a camp. It's fun to come back and train in the off-season,” said McCoy, who has spent the off-season working out at UT. “I love the coaches here, I love the people here. This is our home."

There were plenty of laughs for McCoy working with the kids Friday, but things will get more serious when he reports to the Browns to begin his third season in the NFL.

Cleveland drafted Weeden out of Oklahoma State with the 22nd pick in this year’s NFL draft. Reports out of Cleveland in the off-season have suggested that the Browns are hoping the rookie will quickly win the starter’s job. 

McCoy has repeatedly said he only wants a fair chance to compete for the job. But does he expect to get it? 

"We'll see, I don't know," McCoy said. "There are a lot of things I can control and I'm controlling those things. The things beyond that I try to do my best to not worry about those and go out there and do what I do on the field, that's the most important thing. Beyond that, I can't do anything else."

While McCoy may not understand where he fits in Cleveland’s plans, he likes the direction of the team. 

"We've had some turnover in our coaches, we're on our third offensive coordinator but I felt like it went really well this spring. I learned a lot, improved a lot and I think our team also got a lot better. We're a young a football team and we're going to be a lot better than we were last year but we'll see what happens with my situation," he said. 

While his future is up in the air, McCoy’s message for the campers Friday was more concrete. 

"What I told them early on was I want you to get better at football," McCoy said. "Number two, I wanted to share with them a few things that have made me who I am and maybe helped in the success I've had. Talk about character, talk about leadership, talk about discipline. Some of the things you have to do to make yourself as good as you can be or as successful as you can be."
