AUSTIN(KXAN) - Texas baseball got its first series sweep of the season Sunday afternoon with an 8-2 win over Stanford.
Junior Cameron Rupp got things started with a hard hit RBI single down the third base line that scored Brandon Loy to give Texas a 1-0 lead. Russell Moldenhauer relived his success from the College World Series last year with his first home run of the season – a two-run bomb over the left field fence.
Stanford would get a pair of runs in second and third innings off starting pitcher Brandon Workman.
Kyle Lusson would continue the Texas scoring in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI triple down the right field line to score Connor Rowe and Kevin Lusson. Kyle Lusson would later score on a balk by Cardinal starting pitcher Brett Mooneyham.
Junior Cole Green would carry the Longhorns the rest of the way. Green, who came in the fifth inning, would pitch five perfect innings of relief to earn his second win of the season in less than a week. Green faced the minimum number of batters, 15, and struck out six of them without allowing any walks or hits.
“Our pitching dominated the weekend against a very fine team and then we did well on offense,” said head coach Augie Garrido. “We had a lot of different guys step up at different times throughout the weekend and drive in runs. We’re starting to find our balance point.”
The Horns would get two more runs in the bottom of the eighth when Kevin Lusson doubled into left field and scored Tim Maitland and Connor Rowe from second and first, respectively.
