LONDON (KXAN) - Micah Lawrence of Pflugerville finished sixth in the final of the 200-meter breaststroke, failing to medal in her first Olympics.
American Rebecca Soni won gold and set a new world record with a time of 2 minutes, 19.59 seconds, besting the previous record she set in the semifinals Wednesday.
Lawrence, swimming in lane seven, hovered just behind the leaders in fourth place for the first 100 meters before fading in the second half of the race. Her time of 2 minutes, 23.27 seconds was her best time at the Olympics but was slightly slower than her lifetime-best time of 2 minutes, 23.03 seconds, which she posted in the finals of the US Olympic Trials.
Satomi Suzuki of Japan (2 minutes, 20.72 seconds) won silver, while Iuliia Efimova of Russia (2 minutes, 20.92 seconds) captured the bronze medal.
Lawrence is a 2008 graduate of Pflugerville High and swam for the Texas Gold swim club. She swam collegiately for Auburn before taking the last year off to train fulltime for the Olympics.
