Finals set for state basketball tournament

Action kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday

AUSTIN (AP) - The last spots for Saturday's state basketball finals were up for grabs at the Erwin Center on Friday.

Class 1A Division II
Roxton tops Texline 71-65 in overtime
 Qunton Walker score 25 points and Roxton used a 10-0 run at the start over overtime to pull away from Texline for a 71-65 win Friday in a Class 1A Division II semifinal.

Walker started the overtime period with a 3-pointer and quickly added another basket as Roxton built a 66-56 lead. Texline fought back within 69-65 with 25 seconds left before a Kalyl McGuire's basket for Roxton (29-4) set the final margin.

Aaron Gutierrez had 25 points and 20 rebounds for Texline, missing a desperation 3-pointer in the final second of regulation that bounced off the backboard and twice on the rim before dropping out.

Chance Helm had 25 points and 11 rebounds for Texline. Lester Green and Corinthians Green each scored 16 for Roxton.

Douglass beats Water Valley 53-44
Bryce Westbrook scored 20 points and Douglass cruised into the Class 1A Division II championship game with a 53-44 win over Water Valley in a semifinal Friday night.

Reed Westbrook added 16 points for Douglass (30-6), which advanced to the final in its first state tournament. The Westbrooks combined for five of Douglass's seven 3-pointers.

Douglass led 21-15 at halftime and stretched it to 40-25 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Brock Demere had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Water Valley (33-3).

Class 2A
Defending champion White Oak advances to finals
Hayden Nichols scored 21 points to lead defending state champion White Oak to a 69-50 win Friday over Winnie East Chambers in a Class 2A semifinal at the Erwin Center.

White Oak led 31-24 at halftime and maintained a comfortable margin the rest of the way.

Levi Yancy added 16 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks for White Oak, which shot 46.4 percent from the floor. The team enjoyed a 46-24 advantage in rebounds. Kris Anderson had 13 assists for the winners.

Brennan Beckett led Winnie East Chambers (26-10) with 11 points while Jarrod Guillory and Glenn Roberts added 10 points each. Winnie East Chambers was making its first appearance in the state tournament since 1996.

Brock bounces Idalou for another shot at title
Tre Ewell scored 16 points, including four free throws in the final seconds, as Brock held on Friday for a 56-51 win over Idalou in a UIL Class 2A semifinal at the Erwin Center.

The game was tied 39-39 with 5:25 to play before Brock's Lane Southern hit a 3-pointer and then another basket and a foul shot to stake the Eagles to a 44-39 lead.

Southern, Bailey Cockburn and Dylan Carrigan added nine points each for Brock (32-6).

Koal Houchin led Idalou (34-4) with 21 points. Teammates Alan Zahn scored 13 points, 11 in the first half, and Seth Reagan added 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Brock will face White Oak on Saturday for the 2A championship. It's a rematch of last season's final, won by White Oak.

Class 5A
South Grand Prairie rolls into 5A final
Sophomore guard Jaelan Austin scored 20 points and South Grand Prairie rolled into the Class 5A state championship game with a 60-43 semifinal win over Cibolo Steele on Friday.

Ben Emelogu added 14 points and four assists for South Grand Prairie (37-3), which is playing in its first state tournament since 1975 when the Warriors lost in the final.

Both teams struggled shooting from the field, but South Grand Prairie went 21 of 34 from the free throw line while Steele was just 1 of 8.

C.J. Siples scored 12 points and Austin Henry had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Cibolo Steele (25-13), which finished third in its district before making a run to the school's first state tournament appearance.

Harrison twins send Travis back to 5A final
Fort Bend Travis brought two of the best basketball players in the country to Austin. One more game will decide if the Tigers have the best team in Texas.

Aason Harrison scored 19 points and his twin brother Andrew scored 18 and Fort Bend Travis (32-5) earned a return trip to the Class 5A championship game with a 59-52 win over Richardson Berkner on Friday night.

The senior twins are rated as two of the best players in the country and have signed with Kentucky. They shook off a 3-of-20 shooting start and took take over the game in the second half. They finished with a flurry, showing off a pair of high-flying alley-oop dunks in the final two minutes

Kendal Harris scored to 11 points lead Berkner (33-6).
