AUSTIN (KXAN) - Lake Travis is still alive in their quest for a 5th consecutive state football title. The Cavaliers survived a scoreless 2nd half to knock out rival Cedar Park 14-9 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Running back Varshaun Nixon scored on a 44-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter to give Lake Travis the lead for good.
Cedar Park took their only lead in the 2nd quarter with an Austin Randa fieldgoal to make it 9-7. It was just the second time all season Lake Travis trailed in a game.
Lake Travis receiver Griffin Gilbert opened the scoring with a touchdown pass from Baker Mayfield. Cedar Park then closed the gap to 7-6 after quarterback Brian Hogan found Ethan Frye in the endzone. The Timberwolves missed the point-after attempt.
It was the fourth meeting in 13 months between the two teams. Lake Travis won their state quarterfinal matchup last year 21-20. They beat Cedar Park again for the 25-4A district title this year with a 24-21 win in the regular season finale.
The Cavaliers advance to the 4A Division-1 state semifinals at the Alamodome against the Pearland Dawson-Angleton winner.
