Johnson leads Horns to series sweep

AUSTIN (KXAN) - With two freshmen leading the way, Texas had its best hitting day of the season and earned a weekend sweep of UC Santa Barbara, winning 11-6 on Sunday.

Freshman Ben Johnson – a star a season ago at Westwood High School – hit his first home run as a Longhorn and narrowly missed out on the cycle during a 4-for-4 day.

Johnson led off the bottom of the first inning with the home run. The ball appeared to bounce off the top of the right field wall but was immediately called a home run. Johnson confusedly stop twice on his way around the bases and was tagged on his way to third base, but the call stood.

“I tried not to do anything I haven't done before. I just wanted to be myself. I have confidence in my capabilities and try not to do too much. This game is supposed to be fun and not try to put pressure on yourself,” Johnson said.

Fellow freshman Jeremy Montalbano provided the biggest moment of a five-run fourth inning. His first career hit was a three run homerun that put Texas up 9-1.

Texas has won four games in a row.

“Offensively, it was our best game of the year. This was the most consistent 27 innings of the season where we competed from inning to inning, pitch to pitch,” Longhorns head coach Augie Garrido said.
