AUSTIN (KXAN) - Jarrell beat Bushland 9-2 in the UIL class 2A baseball state championship game, winning the first state championship in a team sport in school history.
“All our names on this baseball team are going down in the record books at Jarrell. It’s an incredible feeling,” catcher Aaron Burns said.
It took Jarrell 13 innings Wednesday to beat Elkhart 3-2 in the state semifinals. The final was nearly half the length and exceedingly less suspenseful.
The Cougars scored three runs in the first inning and threatened to run-rule Bushland in the sixth inning. The Falcons plated a pair of unearned runs with two outs in the seventh, squandering Jarrell junior pitcher Tyler Krupp’s bid for a shutout.
“We kept hearing that we couldn’t hit enough,” head coach Dean Fitzner said. “Today, we put it all together. What a way to go out.”
Krupp stayed on to finish the complete game and was named 2A state championship game MVP
“I never would have expected that we would have got this far. I have all the faith in my team and I’m just glad we made it, it feels really good.” Krupp said.
