AUSTIN (KXAN) - Texas scored four runs in the fifth inning against Kansas to grab control of a game they not only trailed 2-0, but didn't have a hit until that fifth inning. Texas went on to win 7-2 to take two out of three from the Jayhawks.
Freshman Taylor Stell got the scoring started with an RBI single and then Erich Weiss followed with a two-run double to give Texas the lead. The Longhorns added another run in the inning and scored three more for their highest run total in their last seven games.
Hoby Milner (6-4) was the winning pitcher with 2 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out four batters. Freshman Dillon Peters made his first weekend start, but lasted just one after giving up two runs on two hits and three walks. Jordan Etier was 2-4 with and RBI and two runs scored.
"Friday night we weren’t hitting the ball hard so we had a team meeting. We were hitting the balls hard, but they just weren’t dropping, " said Etier. "So we talked about it as a team and said, “We have to keep fighting. It may not go our way at the beginning but we’re not going to let up. And I think we did a good job staying with that."
The Longhorns improved to 23-14 and 11-4 in the Big 12. Texas has a two-game lead over Texas A&M for second place but it's a distant score behind red-hot Baylor. The Bears completed a three-game sweep over the Aggies to improve to 18-0 in league play and extend their win streak to a staggering 24 in a row.
Texas will host Central Arkansas on Tuesday night then it's off to College Station for a Friday game with the Aggies before coming home for games on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon against Texas A&M.
