AUSTIN (KXAN) - The wait is over. Texas begins football season on Saturday evening against Wyoming. Kickoff at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
“We’ve been looking forward to this day for a long time,” sophomore Jaxon Shipley said. “Everything is just kind of hyped up right now. There’s a buzz in the air and everybody is really excited.”
David Ash gets the start under center for the Longhorns. The sophomore beat out Case McCoy for the starting quarterback’s job in preseason camp. Coach Mack Brown has said that both quarterbacks will play against Wyoming, though he hasn’t made it clear how big a role McCoy will have in the offense.
“This team so far has been fun. They’ve really wanted to please the coaches. They really want to please each other. We’re excited about what we see for Saturday night,” Brown said.
Added receiver Marquise Goodwin, "We’ve been putting in the work during the week and on the weekend it’s all fun. Winning is fun and we’ll be doing a lot of that this year, hopefully.”
Wyoming is a member of the Big Sky conference and was 8-5 in 2011, including a loss to Temple University in the New Mexico Bowl.
Tailgating began early on Saturday morning, and Grande Communications has set up a watch party for the game at Republic Square.
