ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) - Hundreds of Round Rock High School students donated money and attended a benefit concert for one of their fellow classmates. The concert "Rock 4 Tim" featured the band Joker, fronted by Dragons kicker J.W. Wright. Tim, is senior defensive tackle and quarterback Tim Robinson, was diagnosed with bone cancer in his left tibia in March. After months of chemotherapy, he found out he had to miss this football season, which would have been his last with the team. "This has really humbled me, and brought me down a little bit," Robinson said.
Robinson’s teammate, Wright, said he was inspired to raise money for the cause. "It's a lot harder than anyone thought that it was," Wright said. "And when everyone went to the hospital to see him, it just shows how hard he's having it right now."
That is when the idea for "Rock for Tim" began: a benefit concert raising money for Tim's medical bills that brought the Round Rock student body together. "It turned out to be a whole bigger deal than I thought," Wright said. "I thought it would just be 50 people or something and their family, my family, our parents. Then it just turned into this whole big thing."
Wright's mother, Simone, helped organize the event. "The kids have been offering money; even donating money when they couldn't come to this concert," she said. "They had to go to work on Sunday, but they took the money out of their pocket and gave it so they could donate it to Tim."
More than 500 tickets were sold. "Rock for Tim" T-shirts sold out. Organizers estimated $10,000 was raised. Tim expects just six more months of chemotherapy. "I just want to let everyone know I really appreciate it, because me and my family would be in a pretty good spot if we didn't have their help. They don't even know. They're doing so much. And I'm really grateful for it."
Donations to the "Rock 4 Tim" fund can be made at the First Texas Bank in Round Rock, on 500 Round Rock Ave .
