Girls state basketball tourney underway

Finals set for Div. 1, 3A and 4A

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The University Interscholastic League girls state basketball tournament kicked off Thursday at the Erwin Center.

Class 1A - Division I
Action kicked off early in the day with Class 1A-Division 1 games.

Smyer won the opening game of the day, edging Dallas Triple A, 40-36 . The Bobcats were led in scoring by Kennedy Farr with 21 points and Jordan Locke with 17. Amber Browning finished with a team-high 17 points for Dallas Triple A.

The Bobcats (33-6) will face Martin’s Mill in Saturday’s championship game. The Mustangs (33-5) took down Snook 54-49 in overtime. Haily Jenkins scored a team-high 15 points for Martin’s Mill. Taylor Munns and Cheyenne Brown each scored 14 in the win. Shakera Barnes had a game-high 21 points for Snook.

Saturday’s championship game tips off at 8:30 a.m.

Class 3A
In Class 3A, Mexia and Kennedale advanced to the championship game.

Mexia trailed by two at halftime before outscoring Krum 28-17 in the second half en route to a 50-41 victory. The Black Cats (35-3) were led in scoring by Brechelle Beachum with 16 and Na’Teshia Owens with 14 points.

Kennedale controlled the game from the opening tip against Smithville and led by 20 after the first quarter and closed the first half with a 46-29 lead. The Wildcats finished with three players scoring at least 20 points in an 87-66 win. Travanti Downes and Autumn Willaims each had 22 points and McKinley Bostad finished with 20. Taryn Leiferman had 19 points in a losing effort for Smithville.

Mexia and Kennedale square off at 10 a.m. Saturday for the 3A crown.

Class 4A
The day wrapped up with Class 4A games.

Dallas Lincoln opened their game trailing by seven at the end of the first, before outscoring Aledo 17-3 in the second quarter. The Tigers kept their foot on the gas in the second half, cruising to a 64-44 win.

Lincoln (36-4) was led by Alisha Washington with 20 points. Jade Colbert scored 14 and Jalah Walton chipped in 12 points. Megan Wood finished with a team-high 13 points for Aledo.

In the nightcap, Georgetown broke a 13-13 tie at the half with a dominating third quarter performance. The Eagles (33-4) outscored Northside Brennan 18-0 on their way to a 44-30 win.

Kaitlin Walla scored a game-high 17 points for Georgetown and Lorrie Santoy finished with 11. Tanaeya Boclair scored 14 for Brennan.

Saturday’s Class 4A final is slated for 3 p.m.
