Georgetown loses in state championship

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Quarterback Jerrod Heard rushed for five touchdowns, including three in the third quarter as Denton Guyer rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat Georgetown 48-37 Saturday in the Class 4A Division I championship game.

Heard, a junior who has committed to Texas, accounted for all seven of Guyer's touchdowns. He rushed for 143 yards and threw for 189, including a 71-yarder to Ellis Jefferson in the fourth quarter.

After an 0-2 start, Guyer (14-2) won its last 14 games to take home its first state title.

Georgetown (15-1), which led 30-14 after early in the third, played in its first state title game after not making the playoffs last season.

Jake Hubenak threw three touchdown passes to Randy Knightner for the Eagles, who saw their 16-game winning streak come to an end.

Heard's 5-yard scoring run gave the Wildcats the lead for good late in the third. The dual-threat quarterback capped the scoring on a 7-yard run with 5:16 left.

Jefferson, an Arizona State commitment, caught seven passes for 176 yards and a pair of TDs.

Georgetown scored 23 unanswered points to take a 30-14 lead. Hubenak's 9-yard pass to Knightner gave them a 30-14 with 8:26 left in the third.

Hubenak was 25 of 43 for 316 yards passing and Knightner had 12 catches for 159 yards.

Heard answered with a 17-yard TD run to make it 30-20, and he followed it up with a 14-yard TD after Guyer turned Georgetown over on downs.

On the next drive, linebacker Connor Allen sacked Hubenak to force a fumble that Guyer's Demontrie Taylor recovered at the 5. Heard ran over two players on his way to the end zone, giving the Wildcats a 34-30 edge with 1:38 left in the third.

Heard's 71-yard strike to Jefferson made it 41-30.

Georgetown scored four plays later on Hubenak's 39-yard toss to Knightner, and the Eagles defense then forced a punt.

On fourth-and-1 from their own 33, Eagles running back Tyler Moody was stuffed for no gain. The Wildcats needed three plays to score, capped by Heard's 7-yard TD that extended the lead to 48-37.

Georgetown committed two turnovers and lost the ball on downs three times in the second half.

Austin Weston rushed for two touchdowns in the first half to help Georgetown jump out to a 23-14 halftime lead.

Weston had an 11-yard scoring run in the first quarter and then tied the score at 14 with a 57-yarder down the right sideline where avoided two tacklers.

Hubenak gave the Eagles a 20-14 lead with a 1-yard scoring toss to Knightner.

Aided by three Guyer defensive pass interference calls on the final drive before halftime, Georgetown pushed its lead to 23-14 on Austin Stevens' 23-yard field goal

Guyer scored on its first two drives of the game.

Heard threw a 31-yard TD to Jefferson and added a 4-yard TD run on the first play of the second quarter.
