AUSTIN (KXAN) - Texas swim coach Eddie Reese has been named to the Olympic coaching staff for Team USA.
“I have never had a goal to be an Olympic coach or to win a NCAA championship,” Reese said. “All I want to do is get people to go faster. I want them to be faster than they could ever believe or any of their friends could believe. This is a high-level bonus."
Gregg Troy will be the men's head coach, with Bob Bowman, Michael Phelps' coach, and David Marsh also serving as assistants.
This will be the seventh Olympics for Reese as a coach, the fourth as an assistant. Reese was head coach for Team USA in 2008, 2004 and 1992.
Reese will be coaching three former Longhorns in Brendan Hansen, Jimmy Feigen and Ricky Berens, who will be swimming in his first individual event in the 200-meter freestyle after Phelps withdrew from the event.
“It was one of the tightest Olympic trials we have ever had,” Reese said. “This might have been the toughest team to make for the USA for both men and women. The competition was at a high level across the board."
Reese will have another former Longhorn swimming in the Olympics in Christian Schurr for Mexico.
Former Longhorn Destinee Hooker also found out she will be heading to London as a member of the USA Volleyball team for the Olympics on Tuesday.
The US Volleyball team roster was officially submitted Tuesday for approval by the USOC by coach Hugh McCutcheon.
The two-time All-American lead Texas to back-to-back visits to the volleyball Final Four, taking the Longhorns to within one set of the national championship against Penn State in 2009.
Hooker was also a four-time national champion in the high jump while on the 40 acres. Her sister, Marshavette Hooker, also a former Longhorn, ran in the 2008 Olympics, but didn't participate in this year's trials due to her pregnancy.
