Eagles eye a 4A state championship

Georgetown football having historic season

GEORGETOWN (KXAN) - Undefeated Georgetown is hoping the best year in school history will last a few more weeks.

The Eagles (13-0) play Nederland Saturday night at the Berry Center in Cypress in a 4A-Division II regional semifinal.

“It’s been a blast,” Georgetown head coach Jason Dean said of his team's historic run, the first 13-0 record in school history. “These kids don’t think they’re supposed to be beat. When you can get a bunch of 16, 17, 18 year-olds believing that, you got a chance to have something pretty special and that’s what these guys think right now. ”

Next up is Nederland. The Bulldogs (12-1) upset No. 1 Pearland Dawson in the third round.

Another upset will be no small task for Nederland. Georgetown has outscored its opponents this season by nearly five touchdowns a game. Led by senior quarterback Jake Hubenak, the Eagles last two playoff opponents are the only two teams on the season to keep the final deficit within three touchdowns. Numbers like that have the Eagles envisioning a state championship.

“It’s something I’ve dreamed about since I was a little kid. Especially growing up with these guys,” Hubenak said.

A knee injury cut Hubenak’s junior year short but he’s bounced back to throw for 42 touchdowns as a senior.

“Knowing what kind of goals we have and after my season last year I just wanted to push myself harder and make a deep run this year,” he said.
