Cowboys Stadium to open on high note

George Strait show first event in massive stadium

ARLINGTON, Texas (KXAS) - The massive new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas opens on a high note with its first event Saturday night.

(Editor's note: Frisco resident Susan Reasor toured the stadium this week. See her slide show to the left.)

Country music fans will flood the new facility for a George Strait concert. Half of the excitement is just getting to see the inside of the billion dollar stadium.

Architect Bryan Trubey designed the stadium.

"We wanted to maintain the characteristic opening that you see with Texas Stadium," Trubey said. "The big picture form of the building was set very quickly."

He drew up the initial plans four years ago after he and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones toured other stadiums. They agreed on the basic design: A domed, retractable roof, monumental arches, and an edgy, futuristic style.

"There's never really been a stadium done of this quality, the overall quality and detail of it," Trubey said.

Now, four years later, what started with a simple sketch turned into the biggest NFL stadium ever built. It's so big, the entire Statue of Liberty could fit inside.

Trubey credits his entire team with making the vision a reality.

"We've had as many as 80 people here working on it," he said. "We've had 300 other consultants working on it. And if you go out there, there's about 12 hundred people on that site building it."

Trubey and his team at H-K-S Architects are leaders in building sports stadiums around the world. In the Dallas area, they also helped design the Ballpark at Arlington and the American Airlines Center.
