Cavs have a shot at history

Potential fifth straight state title on the line

LAKEWAY, Texas (KXAN) - Lake Travis head coach Hank Carter said he received an interesting phone call as he prepared for the State Championship this week.

"The Texas History Museum gave us a call, and I haven't called them back yet because I want to wait, and handle our business this week," he said, smiling. "But statewide, we have an opportunity this week to do something no one's done."

The opportunity is to win five straight state titles. Unprecedented in the history of Texas high school football,  and not lost on the Cavaliers, either.

"It's like living a dream, almost," senior linebacker Corbin Crow said. "That one day you will make it to the top like this, and we have, and we're so close to achieving our goal for so many years in high school."

Senior receiver Griffin Gilbert agreed.

"To just go out and have the chance to do it is just amazing in itself. We know we've only done half the job and just take it now, and try to create history now," Gilbert said.

Part of the Cavaliers' motivation comes from family. Players with older brothers who have won titles on this team say they don't want to let them down, and their brothers have had some advice along the way.

"I had an older brother that played two years on varsity and he had a chance to win two of them," senior offensive lineman Marshall Womack said. "He would always tell me it was the best feeling in the world after he would win. I always think about that. So I know it's going to be worth it in the end."

The message isn't always about the trophy -- it's also about appreciating the chance to play in the last game of the year.

"[My brother] always tells me to just enjoy it," Gilbert said. "Enjoy the moment. Enjoy your senior year because college football is so much different because you're never going to get anything like high school football on Fridays."

The Cavaliers play Waco Midway in the 4A Division I State Championship at 8 p.m. Friday at Cowboys Stadium.
