AUSTIN (KXAN) - Akins High School made history Friday night.

The Eagles 17-16 win over Bastrop ended a 27-game losing streak that dated back to 2009.

"I've been waiting for this feeling since my sophomore season on varsity," said Andy Armendariz. "To come out here every day, working your butt off, not getting the wins, it really puts you down."

"Just not knowing how that felt for such a long time, it was just incredible to get that win," Jerad Loyd said.

"I'm not gonna lie, I showed a lot of emotion," Rakim Jackson said. "I was crying."

Friday's win came almost exactly three years since Akins' last win when it beat Anderson 31-17 on September 25, 2009.

"You go home that, and everybody goes home with a smile on their face," Armendariz said. "You talk about everything that happened. The next day, you're sore, you're all beat up, but you're happy at the same time."

"it was so fantastic," head coach Humberto Garza said. "I felt so happy for our kids. I kept getting texts and phone calls and such congratulating us. it's been a long time, so it felt really good."

Friday's win made for an even more exciting Monday at school for the players.

"Our principal comes on the announcements, congratulates us," Loyd said. "Just walking down the hallway, lots of people saying, 'Great job, great job.' it was a good feeling."

"When you come off a victory, you go to school, you get so many, 'Hey good game,' High fiving, it's lovely," Jackson said. "I love it. it's been a while. i was hoping we could have school on Sunday."

Akins' goes for its second straight win this Thursday against Travis High School at House Park.
