Mack Brown Visits Fort Hood

FORT HOOD - Longhorns head coach Mack Brown spent Tuesday with soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood and talked about facing adversity during times of crisis.

He told a group of more than 200 troops what he says is required to win in college football.

"You all have to be on your game every day," Brown said. "We need to give back to you."

He said he was thankful for the soldiers and what they have sacrificed.

"When you think about the number of soldiers on this base, and the few, the very few that we'll be able to touch today, we probably can't come back enough to touch all the soldiers, but it is something that we want to continue to do and put on our yearly schedule."

Fort Hood's 4th Infantry Division returned from their second deployment to Iraq in February. The unit has spent 27 of the last 39 months overseas.

Sgt. Latasha Arkwright said she tried to watch football games on the Armed Forces Network overseas, but to hear from the head coach in person was better.

"It's wonderful," Arkwright said. "We get to seem them in Iraq but we get to see them after they've already happened, or while it's going on someplace else. So, it's wonderful."

Sgt. First Class Fredrick Mayhan said he appreciates meeting Brown in person on American soil.

"It's hard to tell you what all you take for granted," Mayhan said. "That's just one small facet of it. Just sitting in your living room, you take that for granted too, but it's what we do, and I wouldn't change what I do for anything else."
