LIMOGES, France - Roberto Nocentini of Italy defended his yellow jersey as riders set off without earpieces to prevent easy communication with team cars on stage 10 of the Tour de France.
Tuesday's flat 120.9-mile trek between Limoges and Issoudun favors sprinters.
Seven-time Tour champion Lance Armstrong started the stage in third place, trailing rival and teammate Alberto Contador of Spain by two seconds.
Tour organizers say banning earpieces could inject drama into the race, forcing riders to devise tactics on their own without being given instructions by radio from their team cars.
