BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- It is a day of mourning at Virginia Tech, but there will be at least one demonstration as the campus marks one year since a disturbed gunman killed 32 people and himself.
One group of students plans to lie down in protest of Virginia's gun laws.
Remembrances began at midnight, when a candle was lit in front of the memorial where 32 stones honor the dead. It will burn for 24 hours.
Gov. Tim Kaine has ordered state flags flown at half-staff, and a moment of silence at noon followed by the tolling of bells. A candlelight vigil is planned Wednesday evening.
Many are not sure how best to observe the sad anniversary. Sophomore Heidi Miller, who was shot three times during the gunman's rampage, said "It's like a big question mark. Should we be mourning all day, or should we try to do something normal?"
