GRAPEVINE, Texas (KXAN/AP) -- Republican Gov. Rick Perry said he will run for an unprecedented third four-year term as Texas governor in 2010.
During a break in a Republican Governors Association forum in Grapevine Thursday, Perry said he plans to seek office in 2010.
Perry later this year will become the longest-serving governor in Texas history.
He took over for George W. Bush after the then-governor was elected president in 2000.
Perry has won two four-year terms since then.
There are no term limits for Texas governors.
Republican U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison also has said she's considering a run for governor in 2010. She said it is still too early to make an announcement about the 2010 race.
Hutchison issued this statement Thursday:
"I am encouraged by the growing number of Texans asking me to return home to run for governor to provide leadership for our state. It is too early to make an announcement about the 2010 race. Right now I remain committed to serving the people of Texas in the United States Senate and helping our Republican candidates win crucial elections this fall."
Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst issued this statement Thursday:
"My focus is on the 2009 legislative session and continuing to build on our successes over the past five years. Whatever I decide to do after that will be based on what's best for Texas."
Perry's announcement puts to rest speculation that he's been angling for a vice presidential slot.
