Lightning sparks 2 house fires overnight

AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) -- Lightning from the thunderstorms that blew in overnight caused a house fire in far North Austin.

The house was located in the 14000 block of Olive Hill, which is near 620 and 183.

The fire was contained to the attic, and no one was injured, but a family of five has been displaced.

Damage is estimated at $120,000.

Just after 11:45 p.m. Thursday, Round Rock Fire Department units responded to a report of a structure fire at the 3400 block of Sandy Koufax Lane.

The first fire department units reported light smoke coming from the residence. Investigation showed the home had been struck by lightning, causing an attic fire. 

The residents were home at the time, and the family was able to get out of the house without injury. Damage is estimated at $30,000.

Thirteen firefighters responded with four fire engines and a command vehicle. The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes and completely extinguished in 40 minutes. The last unit cleared the scene just after 2:15 a.m.
