AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) -- A resident in the 4700 block of River Oaks Drive in Kingsland shot a man in the head he thought was breaking into his next-door neighbor's house.

"I heard two shots while I was in my driveway," said Chuck Wolfington. "I backed out, and I saw my neighbor shooting a pistol."

Wolfington heard three more shots follow and then watched his next-door neighbor -- who was holding a .45 pistol -- run into his house to call police. The shots occurred at around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Wolfington said.

In a press release, Llano County Sheriff's Department stated they did receive a 911 call from the shooter informing them some of his neighbor's items were stolen.

The shooter said he saw a vehicle drive up and down his street several times, then back under his neighbor's carport.  The shooter grabbed a pistol from his house and walked over to see what was going on. As he confronted the people in the vehicle, they drove off, and that's when he shot at them.

Fifteen minutes later, a man was found at the EMS Station in Kingsland with a gunshot wound in the back of his neck.  He was transported to LLano Memorial Hospital and then flown to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin.

Wednesday evening friends of the victim told KXAN Austin News the shooting victim was on life support. The Texas Rangers and DPS were called into help find the vehicle he was riding in when he was shot.  After several hours, it was located in Granite Shoals.

Llano County investigators recovered at least five shell casings lying in the grass next to the road where the shooting happened.
