AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) - Police tell KXAN Austin News a small child has drowned at an apartment complex pool in North Austin.

Officers said it happened in the 8000 block of Research Blvd early this evening. By the time KXAN Austin News had arrived on the scene of the drowning, police and EMS crews had virtually taken over the apartment complex parking lot.

Neighbors at the Research Point Apartments said they are shocked and saddened to learn a 6-year-old girl drowned here. According to police, the girl and her family spent the day at the pool. As the family was leaving to head back to their apartment, the young girl ran ahead.

That's when police believe the girl may have run around back to the pool.

When the family got back to the apartment the girl was no where to be found. The family called police a little before 7:30 p.m. to say the girl was missing. The girl was found at the bottom of the pool just after 8 p.m.

Police were at the apartments by that time and did CPR. EMS arrived on scene and took over. The girl was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The lesson in this case, poliec said, is to be extra cautious. It only takes a second for a child to disappear, and children can drown in just two tablespoons of water.
