BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) - A pile of debris and ash is all that is left of Cleo Moore's storage shed after fireworks started a blaze in Moore's yard just after New Year's Eve of this year.
The Moores count themselves lucky, but they worry what could happen this Fourth of July, to themselves and others who are in the path of potential fireworks fires.
Moore showed us some of the damage done. She lost several family heirlooms and photos. She was lucky the damage wasn't far worse. The blaze burned past the home her grandchildren live in and through her storage shed right up to her house.
Moore didn't have insurance so the total loss was costly, but the most frustrating part for her is the fire could have easily been prevented with a little common sense.
Her neighbors were running a fireworks stand and popping them off in this field last January.
Now Moore wants other people to learn from her loss.
"All it takes is one time to shoot the wrong this and then everything goes up in flames," Moore told KXAN Austin News as she showed us the damage on her property.
Meanwhile, the fire department says right now conditions are much worse than they were when the fire started near Moore's house. That means everyone should take special precautions when setting off fireworks tonight.
